Football matchbook covers are rare, far rarer than most cards of the era, and offer perhaps the greatest value for collectors of all 1930s issues. It would be hard to imagine assembling a collection like this from scratch today. This collection is Frank Nagy's second collection of 1930s football matchbook covers, his duplicate near-set, with a few additions added over the years by our consignor. It is almost hard to believe that anyone but Nagy could even have a collection of this magnitude, but the fact is that virtually all of these covers do, in fact, originate from Nagy, and were purchased by our consignor directly from Frank many years ago. This is the only comprehensive collection 1930s football matchbook covers that can hold a candle to the Nagy Collection. These covers includes hundreds of players (and entire franchises) and Hall of Famers whose only "cards" are their 1930s matchbook covers. When his comprehensive collection was offered at auction, it realized in excess of $30,000 and included approximately 800 matchbook covers (all but a few of all different examples known). The largest collection of 1930s football matchbook covers ever assembled was the Nagy Collection, which is not surprising as Frank Nagy was without question the King of Matchbook Covers. This astounding collection of 687 different 1930s Diamond Matchbook football covers represents the second largest and most substantial collection of football matchbook covers ever offered at auction and possibly ever assembled.
